Steve's been making
scale tuned tongue drums for almost 15 years now.
Having worked on so many
tongue drums has given him insight into just what it
takes to make the perfect tuned tongue drum.
All parts are dried
to the correct moisture content, which can take
years. The component parts are then all surfaced to
varying
thicknesses, and assembled in careful order
to ensure the proper weight ratio for the drum.
The drums are then
tightly bonded using high pressure clamping.
After clamping, the
drums are rough sanded, and run through a special
surfacing machine which adjusts the playing board to
the exact
thickness required
for that particular instrument.
The instrument is
then sanded down to 220 using very fine grit sanding
paper.
The keys are then
cut in a special pattern, giving each key the right
width and length for her note in the scale.
After this, the keys
are then fined tuned using special chisels, first by
ear, then even more accurately using electronic
means.
Once the tuning is
completed, the instrument is lightly re-sanded, and
then rubbed with a combination of all natural oils.
The result is a
wonderfully harmonic instrument, whos sound can't
be duplicated.
Steve's drums are
exciting to play, and many different sounds can be
obtained by choice of mallet, and when playing
by hand, using simple
muting techniques.
